ABOUT ABOUT

The Office of Immigrant Affairs will host a roundtable for representatives from multicultural media outlets covering the Philadelphia area.

Representatives from the Mayor’s Office of Education and RebuildPHL will be discussing key initiatives and programs that impact immigrant communities.

Chief Education Officer Otis Hackney will provide a presentation that covers a brief history of school district governance in Philadelphia, how local control will strengthen Philadelphia public schools, the Board of Education appointment process and how residents can apply to the Board or nominate someone for the Board.

David Gould from RebuildPHL will discuss Mayor Kenney’s $500 million program for improving parks, recreation centers, and libraries across the city. In addition to making improvements to these facilities, Rebuild will work with residents to inform what types of improvements are needed and place an emphasis on making sure the contractors and workforce on Rebuild projects are diverse. David will provide an overview of the program, what to expect in the coming months, and how residents and businesses can get involved.

Symbol Lai from the Office of Immigrant Affairs will introduce a new outreach program called the Immigrant Workers Academy. This program introduces available resources to address issues in the workplace and aims to alleviate barriers immigrants face when making complaints. Symbol will discuss how the project emerged in response to community input and will announce the pilot set to take place in Southwest Philadelphia in May 2018.

The Office of Immigrant Affairs (“OIA”) hosts quarterly Multicultural Media Roundtable briefings to ensure that media outlets providing news to non-English speakers in Philadelphia are provided opportunities to learn about and discuss the Kenney administration’s priorities with the Mayor and city officials, particularly those that impact the communities they serve.
